How to Make and Format Yours
A CV is like a resume, however, unlike a shorter resume, a CV provides a complete history of one's career, often spanning several pages, to showcase a candidate's full professional background and accomplishments.
Experiences to include in your CV
You should include everything relevant to what position you are applying for in your CV!
Many students coming out of school or workers who wish to reenter academia may feel like they do not have relevant experience to include. This can only be amplified if you use a current researcher or professor’s CV as a template.
Departments and advisors do not expect you to have the resume of a 20+ year long professional researcher. The point of the CV is to see what experiences have prepared you for graduate school. This would include experiences that showcases your work ethic, leadership and self growth, commitment to your study, and exposure to your field.
Specific things to include: Education info from community college and forward, any experience in your field, significant work you did in undergrad or for your work, and you can include a quick glace at your research interests.
Phrases to include in your CV
The CV should show off what you have accomplished. You want to include action verbs.
Here is a good list I found at LiveCareer.
CV examples
Here is a comprehensive CV guide with examples provided by the University of Illinois Graduate College. The examples used here include a lot of experience, it is ok if you don’t have as many sections as them. The headers you use may also be different because of your individual experiences.
Here is a template to get you started provided by Google Docs, inspired by a Harvard CV template. To edit and personalize the template you must make a copy.
Don’t be afraid to personalize your CV by looking at other examples of CVs and including their headers or adapting their phrasing (without plagiarizing ofc). I suggest keeping the template and layout fairly plain and simple. Admission’s is not a fan of color or fun :(
