What to Wear
What you’ll see at conferences and how to put your best foot forward
What is “Business Casual” ?
I truly believe no one really knows what this means. When you go to a conference, you will see a range of outfits. Some will be wearing jeans and some will be wearing full suits.
The main thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing. That being said, I wouldn’t pull up in sweatpants and a band shirt.
A quote I heard a while ago always sticks with me when I think of conferences is, “no matter where you go, it’s always 70 degrees with florescent lighting.” The only thing that changes is the weather as you are traveling to the conference. If you run cold, I suggest wearing warmer clothes. If you run hot, I’m so sorry but you can’t wear shorts. I suggest investing in breathable fabric. There is usually a coat check when you check into the conference if it is held somewhere cold.
If you are presenting at a conference or attending an interview, from what I have observed, business casual looks like you are dressing like you are going to a nice family event. Shoes literally don’t matter. No one looks at them and you’re walking a lot, just make sure they’re comfortable.
Feminine: a blouse or button up shirt and trousers. Dresses and midi/long skirt work great as well. If you run cold, think of wearing a nice knit sweater or long sleeve shirt.
Masculine: A short or long sleeve button up shirt with trousers. A sweater also works great.
Again, make sure you are comfortable and still feeling like you. Below are some examples I pulled off Pinterest if you would like some visual inspiration!
